Chapter Eighteen

Danielle rolled over and suddenly woke up; Tag was not in bed. She had been seeing the stress he was under and knew where he was. She put on a robe and teleported to the bridge. Tag had his chair turned around and was staring out of the front viewport at the Milky Way. When they went to sleep, the Kosiev was above Bristone; she didn’t sense the ship being moved.

She walked up behind his chair and put her arms around his neck, “Are you, all right?”

Tag didn’t even flinch; he sensed Danielle enter the bridge. “I guess.”

Danielle walked around and sat on his lap. His expression didn’t change, and she knew something had him bothered. He always reacted when she sat on his lap. “Tell me what’s going on, Tag.”

Tag exhaled a long breath as he continued to stare at the beautiful spiral galaxy spinning in the distance in silence. She waited, and he finally made a small shrug, “Do you think we’ll ever encounter a civilization that’s invented time-travel?”

Danielle’s head went back, “Are you serious?”

“There have been many science fiction authors that have written books about it. I just wonder if it’s possible.”

Danielle leaned back into his chest, “I don’t know. If you think back to the time I met you on Earth, everything we take as normal now would have been extreme science fiction back then. I know teleportation was considered impossible and now we do it all over the universe. The idea of more than one universe was a pipe dream according to most physicists. Dimensions were pure science fiction…but here we are. Time-travel isn’t so far outside the realm of imagination to be thrown out. Why are you thinking about that?”

Tag shrugged. Danielle sighed, “You’re thinking, if we could go back, we could have done a better job of preparing what what’s facing us now.”

“Nahhh.”

“What then.”

“If I could go back for just a few minutes, I’d like to sit down with Alexander, eat some popcorn, and talk about nothing important.”

Danielle’s eyes turned moist, as she slowly shook her head on his chest, “Oh, Tag.”

Tag sighed, “Or a few minutes to lay in the grass with Eric outside my house in Central City.” He paused and put his head on top of hers, “It’s the little things that don’t seem so important, when they happen, that I miss the most.” Danielle was silent, and Tag said quietly, “Besides, if we did go back in the past and changed one little thing, it would cause a cascade of events and, who knows, everything might have ultimately been destroyed long ago. I just miss those I loved and never really told them how important they were to me.”

“You could always join them.”

Tag’s instantly lifted his head off hers, “What?”

‘You do believe that after our lives end here, we’ll be somewhere else, right?”

“I guess.”

“You need look no further than Rose’s spirit making contact with the Rose here in our time. If her spirit made contact, then all of our friends are with her, wherever that is.
